App Store · region change guide

Before you switch App Store countries, know what you are giving up

Changing your App Store country is more like moving house than flipping a switch. Active subscriptions must be cancelled and allowed to expire. Payment methods must match the new country. Family Sharing needs everyone in the same region. And some apps you already paid for may not be in your new store at all. Some apps may disappear from your library. Others may update to a different version. Here is exactly what changes — and what does not.

What actually changes when I switch App Store country?

Changing your App Store country affects: your active subscriptions (they must be cancelled first), your payment methods (must match the new country), your purchase history (does not transfer), and app availability (some apps may not be in the new store). It does not affect: your iCloud data, your photos, your contacts, or your device settings. Your Apple ID remains the same.

What you lose when switching App Store countries

Active subscriptions through Apple (iCloud+, Apple Music, Apple TV+, Fitness+, third-party subscriptions billed through Apple) must be cancelled and allowed to expire before switching. You cannot carry an active subscription across countries.

Payment methods are tied to your App Store country. A US App Store account requires a US payment method. Some users use gift cards as a workaround, but this limits subscription auto-renewal.

  • All active subscriptions must be cancelled first
  • Payment method must match the new country
  • Purchase history stays in the old store
  • Some apps may disappear from your library

What stays the same

Your iCloud data, photos, contacts, calendars, and device settings are not affected by an App Store country change. Your Apple ID login credentials do not change. Family Sharing can continue but all members must be in the same country.

Apps you already installed stay on your device — they do not vanish. But updates are a different story. You will need to switch back to the original store to update them, which gets tedious fast. Test the workflow with one non-critical free app before committing to a region switch. Test this with a non-critical app first.

  • iCloud data is unchanged
  • Device settings and photos unaffected
  • Family Sharing requires same-country accounts
  • Installed apps remain but updates may be blocked

Frequently asked questions

Does WLOC change my App Store country?

No — and this is the single most important distinction on this page. WLOC changes device location. Your Apple ID country is an entirely separate account-level setting.

Can I have two Apple IDs for different countries?

Yes. Some users maintain separate Apple IDs for different App Store regions. You can sign in and out of the Media & Purchases section in Settings while keeping your primary iCloud account for data.

Will I lose my photos if I change App Store country?

No. iCloud data, photos, and device settings are separate from your App Store country.
